With the investment value of at least US$ 5.18 billion from approximately 8,000 companies in the fields of industry, tourism and trading, Batam strives to provide modern facilities with an excellent level of quality. One of the facilities to provide this is the Hang Nadim International Airport which was constructed by the Government of Indonesia with an approximate value of investment at Rp. 1 trillion.
Hang Nadim Airport obtained its name from a famous Admiral from the region who fought against Portuguese colonialism during the 16th century. The admiral could be seen very closely with his sea eagle, and thus, attained the nickname “Sea Eagle”. We can see a monument of a Sea Eagle as we approach the airport from the city.
Hang Nadim Airport was initiated by the Batam Industrial Development Authority in 1983 and inaugurated by the former Indonesian President Soeharto, on December 11, 1995. He stated that “We are determined to make Batam and its surrounding islands to become the most important industrial and tourism area in Indonesia and even in Southeast Asia.” During his address as the Chairman of the Batam Industrial Development Authority at the inauguration of the airport in 1995, Prof. Dr. Ing. BJ Habibie said that Hang Nadim International Airport was intended to become the center for cargo and chartered flights.
The airport has contributed significant benefits to the trading, industrial and tourism sectors on the island. Industrial products to be exported to other countries which had to transit through Singapore previously, can be directly exported through Hang Nadim Airport. This means of transportation has encouraged and supported delivery of products with short subsistence, such as flowers, food and fresh seafood. Federal Express, DHL or United Parcel Service (UPS) can land their flights here to best serve their clients from Indonesia with the service charge and landing fee at 50% less than any other international airport in the region.
Hang Nadim airport also connects Batam to other favorite tourist destinations in Indonesia such as Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali and North Sumatra through regular flights to the capitals of those provinces. During the pilgrimage month to Mecca, flights from Surabaya (East Java), Ujung Pandang (South Sulawesi), and Balikpapan (East Kalimantan) stop at this airport for refueling and then continue their flights to Jeddah. In the past, these flights had to stop at either Singapore or Bangkok but now with the Hang Nadim International Airport, these trips have had their costs of refueling and flight service greatly reduced.
By design, Hang Nadim is the biggest and most technologically advanced airport in Indonesia. Having the longest runway in Indonesia at a length of 4,025 m and a width of 45 m, the airport can facilitate the take-offs and landings of cargo flights and even a fully-loaded of Boeing 747-400. Equipped with the best monitoring equipment, such as Automatic Weather Observation System (AWOS) and Siemens Computerised Monitoring System (SICOMOSS) in order to ensure flight safety; together with medical clinic, hotel transit, airplane hangar service and apron of 104,500 m2, the airport is capable of serving wide body airplanes such as the Boeing 747-400, MD-11 and Airbus at anytime. Terminal buildings have an area of 31,500 m2 with 4 passenger bridges, 16,230 ton capacity of cargo warehouse and 114,500 m2 parking space which can cater for 1.5 to 1.8 million passengers annually.
Ultimately, the airport is designed to have an apron of 170,000 m2, terminal buildings of 88,000m2, and 48,690 ton of cargo warehouse as well as 12 passenger bridges. It has been designed to cater for 3.6 to 4 million passengers per year.
Now, with the professional services provided by the airport, there are no hassles in shipment and air transportation for export products from Batam or from other parts of Indonesia. There are also no more worries over freshly-cut flowers or fresh seafood that they will go bad during their shipment to Europe or Japan.
